Chancay Port is a large multifunctional deepwater port located in Chancay, Peru, officially opened in November 2024 as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, with an investment of 3.3 billion USD. The port is a joint venture between the Chinese state-owned shipping and logistics company COSCO Shipping and the Peruvian mining company Volcan Compañía Minera, with COSCO Shipping holding a 60% stake. Situated approximately 78 kilometers north of Lima, the capital of Peru, Chancay Port is the largest Chinese investment in Latin American ports and China’s first logistics hub on the Pacific coast of Latin America.

The first phase of Chancay Port’s transformation has enabled the port with four berths to have a water depth of 16-18 meters, capable of accommodating container ships with capacities up to 14,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) and a yearly handling capacity of 1 million TEU. The total investment is expected to reach at least 3.6 billion USD, with the port expanding to 15 berths capable of handling ships with capacities of 24,000 TEU. Vessels using the port will significantly reduce shipping times between Peru and China, from the usual 35-40 days to 23 days.

Chancay Port is not only a deepwater port but also the first smart and green port in South America, set to bring significant benefits to Peru and create numerous trade and investment opportunities. The first phase is expected to create over 8,000 direct employment opportunities. The port project office has initiated the establishment of a wildlife rescue center, actively taking on the responsibility of rehabilitating penguin, seal, and bird species, while enhancing the ecological health of wetlands, coastlines, and natural habitats.

Aiming to become a hub port in Latin America, Chancay Port is known for its operational efficiency and commitment to green, low-carbon growth. With effective operations, the port’s goal is to transform the shipping route between Chancay and Shanghai into a prosperous path for the common prosperity and development of China and Latin America.
